San Jose sits just one point above Sporting Kansas City in the Western Conference cellar. The Quakes have spent 2022 alternating between being a sideshow early in the season and a scrappy (if at times rudderless) spoiler side. He, like the rest of the United States men’s coaching staff, are not under contract after the year’s end. Instead, he worked out a move ahead of time: Gonzalez will take over the San Jose Earthquakes after the World Cup in Qatar. With the tournament now less than 100 days away, it was safe to assume that Gonzalez would stay put and keep his options open to see if new doors were opened on the back of a strong tournament. While the club sat 11th in the West at the time of his dismissal, he was viewed as a true embodiment of the club’s ethos: an eye on development, both of players and Gonzalez alike.ĭespite several intriguing vacancies across MLS this past offseason, Gonzalez instead joined Gregg Berhalter’s staff on December 4 to see out the United States men’s successful World Cup qualification campaign.
He led Dallas to the playoffs in his first two years despite fielding a roster with a far lower wage bill than most of their league rivals.
Gonzalez had spent a decade with the club, playing a pivotal role in establishing an academy which is now among the most prolific in the country. Few coaching dismissals in recent MLS memory came as a greater surprise than when FC Dallas cut ties with Luchi Gonzalez late in the 2021 season.
